Cutting the concrete. The initial plan was to cut mostly through the slab, then excavate under the edge enough that I could snap the unwanted part off. Well- once again, you never know what you'll find until you start working. The edge of the slab was at least 8-10 inches thick and impossible to dig out underneath.
