The foundation for your storage shed is one area of your shed building construction project where good plans and some extra thought will make your investment last for many years. Your choices depend on many factors: budget, ground, typical weather and others. There are 4 main types of shed foundation to consider in your plans. Keep reading to discover what these are.
Plain dirt floor
The simplest wooden storage shed foundations are based on a plain dirt floor. This is fine for a pole type barn. But there is one thing to note. If your shed walls need to be framed then you must have a solid, level and dry surface for it to rest on.
Crushed gravel
Crushed gravel (about 6 inches) is a suitable foundation If water drainage is unlikely to be an issue. It is better to place blocks on the gravel. You should then put the shed floor supports on these blocks. This will keep the shed up and off the ground
Concrete slab
Another option is to make a concrete slab. Unfortunately this can become expensive and most DIY builders are not skilled at pouring concrete slabs themselves. If you do choose to use a concrete slab then remember that concrete will absorb water. Remember to use pressure treated wood at the points where it comes against the concrete.
Concrete piers
Concrete piers could also be poured below grade and beams attached for the shed to sit on. This is an excellent method for keeping the structure up and off the ground while providing solid support for concrete foundations
Whichever foundation you choose, just make sure the shed can rest completely level. This will ensure the doors and windows can fit and open properly. Any water needs to be diverted away from the shed foundations to prevent it laying and causing the building to lean on either side
