How Should I Store My Firewood?

The best way to store your firewood will depend on whether your firewood is wet or dry. If it is wet then the objective will be to store it in a way that will help it dry. If it's already dry then the objective will be to store it in a way that will keep it dry.

If your firewood is green it's important that you store it in a way that it will get plenty of air circulation and if possible full sunlight. You will get better air circulation if you stack the wood than in you just leave it in a heaping pile. Just be sure and leave a few inches of space between the stacks or other objects so air can freely circulate.

When the wood is green it can be best to store it uncovered outside exposed to the sun and wind. If you must store it in a shed make sure the shed is not closed up and is made so air can circulate. A lean-to type structure with open walls can be better for storing wood than a closed building.

If your firewood is dry it's not as critical how you store it. Mostly it's important to keep it in a covered area to keep the rain off it. It's still good to make sure it has air circulation in case it gets wet or absorbs moisture from the air.

Some other general tips are to keep your firewood up off of the ground by putting it on a concrete slab, a tarp, stickers or anything to keep it away from direct soil contact. If you cover it with a tarp or plastic sheeting don't cover the whole pile all the way to the ground. This will seal in any moisture and the wood will stay wet and could start to mold and decay. Instead leave some, preferably a lot of the sides exposed so the air can circulate.

Always keep safety in mind. Make sure your stacks of wood are stable so they won't fall on anyone and keep them in a safe location away from any source of fire.
